Manufactured and stamped by van de Groenekan. It also wears the Cassina stamp, which v.d. Groenekan was obliged to add since the early 70s (when Cassina obtained the rights to produce all of Rietveld's designs) Hence the double stamp (also rare) Interesting detail is that Cassina never actually manufactured the Steltman in their own factories. A luminist and very atmospheric wintery landscape by Jacobus Doeser (Utrecht 1894- Heemstede 1979). Thick paint on cotton. Estimated 1920-1930s. Doeser lived a secluded life but has an extensive oeuvre. Doeser got more recognition after his painting ' A still life with white lilies' sold at Christies in 2001. In the 1910s Doeser came into contact with Piet Mondriaan and other 'ideaists', artists who depicted the forms of reality, but with a search for innovation. Some early work by Mondriaan shows the same kind of use of bright luminist colours. Doeser was also influenced by Van Gogh. This work was most probably painted on one of his travels, maybe Switzerland or in Germany, where Doeser lived in the 1920s. It has very thick paint. It is completely cleaned and professionally restored. Size outside is 117 cm x 97 cm. Title: ''Staande Vrouw'' (translates as ''Upright Woman'') Extremely large, ideal to fill an empty wall. See the size in comparison with a Zig Zag in some of the other pictures😊 The Amersfoort-born artist Jan Spronk (1920-1970) is known for his abstract style. His subjects were primitive cultures, animals still lifes and landscapes. His earlier artworks have characteristics of cubism. He mainly worked in Amersfoort, Amsterdam, Arnhem and Laren. Spronk was shortly taught by the Italian painter Francesco Ferraro. Later around 1942 he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem. New in stock this mystery Zig Zag - a really well made 1930s one with perfect proportions and made of 2 mirrored slats of oak. It's different from the ones made by van de Groenekan, which didn't have dowels but brass screws and had three planks of wood. The dowel joints, the age (also confirmed by an expert) and the fact that it wasn't exactly made to resemble a Groenekan or Rietveld it makes one wonder.. Who made this? It is very old, it is perfectly shaped, stable and placed next to a Groenekan the silhouet matches 100%. The name Art Deco found its origin.. a '' L’ Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes'' As we approach its centenary, we found an original 1925 book owned by the H.F. Jansen Firm with a lot of interesting material inside: the original and typografically interesting, regulations of participation, the registration form, the floorplan and a letter with congratulations for winning 4 Grand Prix. Their entries were by Kramer, vd Wijdeveld, Rutgers and Warners. Also a whole collection of articles in papers from 1925, with vivid descriptions of colours and details. And information we didn't have before 💥 what are the odds to learn from a 1925 paper that Adrianus Remiens was also part of the 1925 Jansen crew and did the imaginative woodcarving on Piet Kramer's pieces. You can't get much more Dutch Art Deco than this 😊This chair comes from a set that was part of the meeting room interior of an auction house in Venlo (1928), designed by architect J.Grubben . Grubben (1884-1964) was inspired by 'De Stijl', but he was also influenced by Amsterdam School and the Hague School. In this chair there's cubist elements, straight lines, but also the rounded black stretchers at both sides and then the top of the backrest hints towards Amsterdam School. The design of the auction house by architect Jacq Grubben shows the same set of characteristics. We have two of these chairs available. Now sold Very rare geometric 'grotesque' face mask by Ron Birks, Newport Pottery, Burslem, England, late 1920s. In excellent condition, no restorations, no damages. Seen by the handwritten signature on the back this piece has to be one of the earliest of the series grotesque face masks. Clarice Cliff, who apprenticed Ron Birks and is well known for her vivid coloured patterns on these mask, was not yet included n the signature. Ron Birks is said to have found inspiration for the design in the work of the Dutch Hieronymous Bosch (1450-1516), who's paintings were are often filled with strangely animated objects, bizarre plants and animals, and monstrous, amusing, or diabolical figures. Also a precursor of cartoon/comic drawing.. New in: Large custom made modernist wall lamp made for the Headquarters of the Dutch Royal Airforce, ca. 1950. When they changed the RAF headquarters' interior on the 1e Jan van den Boschstraat in The Hague, this lamp (amongst others) was salvaged. Some other pieces ended up in the Gispen Museum. With pride we present our latest acquisition - a set of two Rietveld Zig Zag chairs, commissioned in 1971 by D. Mees for the dining table in her Rietveld ''Van Dantzig''' house. These were made by G.A. van de Groenekan in the original 1930s manner with the 7 dovetail joints (without the holes in seat and back). Not only this is what makes them unique - since the early 1970s they have been documented/photographed and published in several international reference works about Rietveld's houses and architecture. I bought this because I think it has P.E.L. Izeren (Genneper Molen) written all over it. It's not marked though. It is extremely heavy and well made with mostly solid wood, oak and macassar (veneered on top). Today I had a visit from one of the most knowledgable dealers in the Netherlands and he said Izeren as well 😊. It's a crazy looking little one drawer cabinet (69 cm height, 51 x 51 wide and deep).
