A rare pair of Amsterdam School table lamps by Winkelman & Van der Bijl, executed in dark patinated copper with a wonderful cut-out decoration. Their form is full of character: domed perforated tops, pointed finials, rhythmic rows of openings, and pierced panels that create a beautiful play of light when illuminated.
The lamps have a striking architectural quality, shaped as small towers. The pierced metalwork, pointed cut-outs and legs with rounded feet all show unmistakable Winkelman & van der Bijl quality.
They work beautifully as table lamps, but also especially well as night lamps. Placed on bedside tables, they give a soft, atmospheric light rather than a harsh practical one, with the perforated metal casting a warm and intimate glow. '
The lamps have been expertly rewired for EU standards.
About Winkelman & Van der Bijl
Founded around 1910, Winkelman & Van der Bijl quickly earned a reputation as masters of ornamental metalwork. By 1915, they were producing the exterior lamps and decorative details for Amsterdam’s landmark Scheepvaarthuis, a cornerstone of Amsterdam School architecture. Their workshop became a frequent collaborator with sculptor Hildo Krop and architects such as Piet Kramer and Adriaan Moen, contributing lighting, railings, and decorative ironwork to bridges, public buildings, and even the famed Gerzon fashion house on Spuistraat.
Through these commissions, Winkelman & Van der Bijl helped define the material language of the Amsterdam School—an aesthetic that fused craft, fantasy, and monumental form into an enduring vision of modern Dutch design.
