An elegant Dutch Art Deco accent table from the 1920s, made in solid oak and displaying the strong geometric language associated with the Hague School.
The design is beautifully balanced between circles and straight architectural lines. A substantial round tabletop appears almost to float above four tall, slender supports, each gently tapering towards the centre and finished with a subtle stepped foot. Beneath the top, the legs are connected by a geometric framework, while a small circular platform at the centre of the lower stretchers repeats the form of the tabletop on a much smaller scale.
The piece is characteristic of the Dutch Hague School, an important branch of Dutch Art Deco that developed during the 1920s. Hague School furniture is known for its architectural construction, restrained ornament and emphasis on proportion and geometry, often allowing the structure of the furniture itself to become its decoration. In contrast to the more expressive forms of the Amsterdam School, Hague School designs generally have a calmer, more rational character than Amsterdam School design.
The warm oak and beautifully aged surface soften the strict geometry, making this a particularly attractive piece for a contemporary interior.
