Product Details
A unique painted rather large side table, very recognizably Amsterdamse School. The oval top is decorated with bold, graphic motifs - one of the hallmarks of the Amsterdam School’s expressive and artistic approach to applied arts. Its sculptural base and vivid surface design make it as much an artwork as a functional piece of furniture. The paintwork is very silimar to designs by Jan van Zeeland, a designer from the Dutch Art Deco period who is known for his expressive hand-painted furniture. The table is competely original and unrestored.
It's a great collector's piece for the Amsterdam School enthusiast but also a daring out of the box choice for eclectic interior designers. It could also serve well as a cocktail table / drinks table with an oval glass tabletop to protect the surface.
Tables in this style are very rare and increasingly popular as interior accent pieces.
The table is quite heavy (around the 10 kg) very stable and sturdy, the wood is oak.
Background information Amsterdam School
''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms such as sculpture, furniture design and urban planning. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship.
The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide.
''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style from the period 1910-1930 by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij.
The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre.
Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
