A highly decorative Dutch Amsterdam School pendant lamp dating from the 1920s - 1930s, executed in wrought iron and an opaline glass lampshade.
The lamp design drew its inspiration from the crown jellyfish, translating its floating, tentacled form into wrought iron and opaline glass. It has that fantastical, slightly otherworldly quality found in the best Amsterdam School designs: sculptural, theatrical, and just a little bizarre.
The wrought-iron ribs give the fixture the strange, hovering presence of a crown jellyfish, with the opaline globe glowing like a soft body beneath its dark iron tentacles. Multiple tiers of curved ribs, hooks, scrolls and tentacle-like elements are arranged around the central body, creating an enchanting silhouette.
When walking around the lamp, the overlapping iron “tentacles” create a subtle sense of motion. This kinetic quality gives the piece a remarkable presence: decorative from a distance, intricate and almost hypnotic up close.
We believe the lamp may possibly be connected to Winkelman & Van der Bijl, the Amsterdam metalwork firm known for expressive Amsterdam School lighting and decorative metalwork.
