A pair of vintage 1980s Cassina “Zig-Zag” chairs in cherry wood, marked underneath and numbered consecutively (2981, 2982). The set comes from the first owner and has been very well cared for. They are structurally in perfect condition with no repairs and no wood chips—only a few light scratches consistent with 45 years of careful use. The cherry shows a lovely depth and grain with Cassina’s original natural polish.
The Zig-Zag is a true design icon, sought after by interior designers and De Stijl enthusiasts. It’s also worth noting that the set should only grow in value over time as they move toward antique status within the licensed Rietveld × Cassina canon. Cassina obtained the official rights to manufacture the Zig-Zag in 1973.
Designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the early 1930s, the Zig-Zag was radical for its day: a perfectly stable chair that looked daringly fragile—a cantilevered seat with no stretchers. It was an unprecedented feat of engineering. Rietveld affectionately called it “the little zigzag,” sometimes describing it as “a shot into space,” a form whose lightning-bolt profile ends in the backrest’s straight line into the sky.
With their pure geometric form, sophisticated joinery, and a rich lineage in modernist design, the Zig-Zag chair remains a touchstone of 20th-century furniture. These 1980s pieces carry that legacy while offering immediate usability.
