Pair of ‘Utrecht’( model R31) Armchairs, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the mid 1930s. In 1988, to commemorate the centenary of Rietveld’s birth, Cassina resumed production of the Utrecht
chair as part of its I Maestri
collection. These 1990s examples have been reupholstered in a richly textured neutral boucle fabric, enhancing the sculptural presence and architectural clarity of Rietveld’s design while offering a contemporary tactile warmth.
Architectural and bold, the Utrecht armchair embodies Gerrit Rietveld’s radical approach to form and structure. Designed in 1936 for Metz & Co. in Amsterdam, the chair’s geometry is defined by two intersecting planes: the armrests sweep forward to become the front legs, while the angled junction of seat and backrest ingeniously serves as the rear support. The result is a composition that appears simultaneously solid and dynamic - a precise balance of volume and void, line and mass.
This 1990s Cassina set in new upholstery that enhances the chair’s modernist silhouette have a deep seat and generous armrests which provide unexpected comfort within the clear logic of Rietveld’s construction. This striking pair of armchairs works effortlessly in a contemporary setting, yet blends perfectly with Hague School and De Stijl pieces - as seen in some of the photos.
