Product Details

A pair of Haagse School nightstands designed by Hendrik Wouda for H. Pander & Zonen, dating from the 1920s. Both cabinets are marked on the inside of the door with the Pander mark and the design is documented in several publications.

The nightstands are beautifully architectural in form: compact, cubist and rigorously modern, with the clear straight lines and block-like volumes that define Wouda’s best work. The construction is sober but not plain. Everything is about proportion: the shape of the legs, the framed door, the raised lower apron, the flat planes of oak, and the heavy black polished granite top. The result is pure Haagse School modernism: rational, strong and refined, with no decorative excess.
Hendrik Wouda was one of the key figures of Dutch interwar furniture design. Trained as an architect, he joined H. Pander & Zonen in The Hague in 1917, where he was given the freedom to develop his own monumental modernist style. His furniture is known for its cubist forms, clear geometry, balanced proportions and architectural discipline. His work can be placed within the Haagse School, the Dutch modernist movement of the interwar period characterized by straight lines, cubist forms and a more restrained, architectural alternative to the expressiveness of the Amsterdam School.
Pander was among the most important Dutch furniture houses of the period, and Wouda’s designs for the firm belong to the most sought-after examples of Dutch Art Deco and Haagse School furniture. All Wouda pieces speak the same language; cubist geometry, excellent oak construction, and a preference for architecture over ornament.
These nightstands are especially elegant because of the contrast between the warm oak and the black granite tops. The granite gives them weight, luxury and a slightly severe modernist edge, while the oak keeps them domestic and warm. The black square knobs echo the top and add a small but decisive graphic accent.
The two cabinets are not perfectly identical in the expression of the wood grain. One door shows a more vivid and dramatic grain pattern than the other. This is most probably caused by the fact that these two were not made as a set, but instead of a flaw, we think it is part of their charm. In Wouda’s world, the woodgrain itself often becomes the decoration, carrying visual interest, very much in keeping with the Haagse School preference for material honesty and structure.
The pair has been expertly restored and is in good condition. They are ready to use as nightstands, bedside cabinets, side cabinets or sculptural storage pieces in a modernist interior.
Condition
Good restored condition with signs of age and use consistent with the 1920s. The oak has been professionally restored and presents beautifully, with warm colour and strong grain. The black polished granite tops show minor age-related traces and small chips around the edges. Both doors function and both nightstands are marked on the inside of the door with the Pander mark.
