Product Details
A solid brass oval chess table with the original brass and metal pieces, designed and produced in the 1970s. Now iconic and quite rare to find.
With its sculptural brass base, precision joints, and serene oval form, it embodies everything Ghyczy stood for: balance, elegance, and craftsmanship that defies time. It’s more than a table - it’s a conversation piece, a symbol of intellect and leisure, and a tribute to Ghyczy’s love for refined, functional beauty. A functional work of art for cosmopolitans, aesthetes, and those who believe that even a game of chess deserves a pedestal worthy of design history.
Peter Ghyczy (1940–2022) was more than just a designer; he was a visionary who shaped modern design language with bold innovation and quiet elegance. Best known for the iconic Garden Egg Chair (1968), now in museum collections around the world, Ghyczy defined a new era of functional art. His early work, including the first polyurethane furniture collection for Vitra, established him as a pioneer in both materials and methods.
In 1972, Peter Ghyczy founded his own studio where he pursued his relentless curiosity in construction techniques and pure forms. His signature approach—fusing industrial precision with aesthetic clarity led to the creation of the frameless glass table T14 in 1973, a milestone in minimalist furniture design. His joining techniques, often invisible to the eye, were engineering marvels that celebrated symmetry, tension, and balance.
Peter Ghyczy was captivated by archetypes, whether designing furniture, lighting, and also houses, he sought to create harmony between object and environment. His pieces were designed not for trends, but for timeless living.
Peter Ghyczy passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a timeless collection that continues to inspire architects, designers, and collectors alike.
The table is in good vintage condition, with patina and signs of its 50 years of age. It stands very stable because it weighs around the 15 kilograms.
