Curt Fischer is well known for his innovative designs and still regarded as one of the greatest 20th-century inventors. At the time, just after WW1, recovering from the war, people worked long hours until late in the evening. The then-typical lamps would only cast light from the ceiling, causing the shadow of the worker’s body and head to cast shades over their projects. For an inventor like Curt Fischer, who had transformed horse-drawn coaches into mobile radio stations during the war and who had participated in the development of the communication devices for the Zeppelin, this situation posed an intriguing challenge. It wouldn’t take him long to come up with a solution: in November 1919, his famous Scherenleuchte (Scissorarm Lamp) was born, soon to be followed by other new types of Machine lamps. They would soon be found in the metal workshop of the Dessau Bauhaus. With the development of these adjustablee lamps, Curt Fischer became the inventor of directional light. In1922 he created the first glare-free lampshade (with a rotatable and asymmetrical design) for perfectly directed light.
This model 505 is fitted with one. The original drawing of the design is added in the picture presentation.
His lamps are known to have been in the homes and workplaces of famous Bauhaus designers like Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Marianne Brandt
