Product Details
An occasional table or coffee table in oak and macassar ebony, 1920s. The modernist design with the pointed legs is very similar to the designs by Hendrik Wouda - hence attribiuted to. There aren't other known Dutch designers that used these same shapes and forms, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.
This piece has a well thought out geometric design, very pleasing to the eye, timeless and modernist. The table is in very good, professionally restored condition with only small signs of the time.
Background information Hendrik Wouda:
Hendrik Wouda (1885 - 1946) was a Dutch architect, interior designer and furniture designer.
According to Wouda, house interior is an inseparable part of architecture. His furniture is characterized by geometric shapes and clean lines. Wouda designed 'strict' rationalistic furniture, always with a personal signature in his designs which makes them very recongizable. The pointed legs of tables and chairs is one of those signatures.
The style of this table is Haagse School, a new style that manifested itself in The Hague during the Interbellum years. It was meant to represent a luxurious and modern design style and also reflected the modernist architecture style of the time, targeting the upper class clientele.
Important influencers for Wouda were the American modernist Frank Lloyd Wright and the avant-garde movement ''De Stijl''.
Wouda was head of (modern) design at the famous furniture firm H. Pander en Zn. His students included Cor Alons and J. Brunott.
