A beech wooden crate chair from the mid to late 70-ties, marked Cassina and numbered. This chair came from a private collection and first owner. It is in very good condition with only small signs of age and wear. The wood has a lovely woodgrain and the chair is very stable and sturdy.
The series of so called ''crate furniture'' was designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1934 . At the time, the crate furniture was actually made from the pine of old crates. The original design from those years was well documented and after Rietveld's death in 1964, these chairs were taken into production again by Metz&Co, the only difference being more luxurious woodtypes used.
In 1973 the Italian manufacturer Cassina obtained the rights to start making the original designs by Gerrit Rietveld.
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888 -1964) was one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all times. Son of a carpenter, Rietveld was trained by his father as a cabinetmaker before setting up his own shop in 1917. By 1919, he had embarked upon a career in architecture and joined the ’De Stijl’ Movement, which helped define his progressive style. Rietveld’s avantgarde approach was focused on adapting and adjusting architecture to the ways people lived their lives, constantly seeking harmony between architecture and interior.
