Product Details

A rare and documented Dutch Art Deco side table, model no. 255, designed by P.E.L. Izeren for De Genneper Molen, dating from the 1920s.

This is a particularly scarce model, and the first example of no. 255 we have encountered. Executed in figured oak with black-stained detailing, the table has a strong architectural presence.

Executed in solid lively grained oak with sharply contrasting black-stained detailing, the table has a wonderfully architectural quality. Its octagonal top is framed by a precise black border, while geometric black bands continue vertically down the legs, emphasizing the construction rather than merely decorating it. Beneath, a square lower tier creates an intriguing dialogue between octagonal and rectilinear forms and gives the table its almost tower-like presence.

The design is characteristic of Izeren’s work for De Genneper Molen, combining the disciplined geometry and restraint associated with the Hague School with a more expressive decorative quality reminiscent of the Amsterdam School.

De Genneper Molen itself has an interesting history. Originally established as a sawmill housed in an old water mill in Gennep, its name refers to the mill whose waterwheel initially powered the sawmill. From around 1917 the company began producing small pieces of furniture including tables, umbrella stands, coat racks and tea cabinets. Described in its catalogues as supplementary furniture, these pieces gradually became an important part of the company’s production.
Model no. 255 is documented in the original De Genneper Molen catalogue, making this unusually sculptural little table particularly interesting for collectors of Dutch interwar design.

The table is in very good condition, with only minor signs of age and use and a beautifully preserved character.
