Product Details
A Dutch Art Deco small elegant occasional table or side table, around 1920s, in solid oak with modernist lines. It is quite an unusual and stylish little table. Very suitable for interior styling.
The style is The Hague School but has some characteristics of Amsterdam School as well. The design is reminiscent of pieces by Paul Bromberg (the shape of the tablelegs and the ball in the middle of the base)
Considering age and use, the table is in very good condition. It was very well made, from heavy wood and it stands very stable (also due to the design). There are some signs of the time, if one looks very closely there is a slight bend in the wood of the tabletop. This is hardly visible.
Background information The Hague School
In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as Haagse School. More cubist and functional than the imaginative Amsterdam School style, but with some similarities as well.
After the First World War, young designers such as Hendrik Wouda, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern interior design. For inspiration they chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements in furniture design of that time. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its recognizable forms and shapes.
