An Amsterdam School pedestal from the 1920s, combining a striking silhouette with the expressive use of wood and decorative detailing.
The design is built around a hexagonal top, supported by four broad, tapering panels of elm that splay gently outward towards the floor. This arrangment gives the pedestal a sculptural quality that changes considerably depending on the viewing angle.
Particularly appealing is the natural grain of the elm. Some surfaces display beautifully pronounced, almost swirling patterns, while others have a more restrained, linear grain. These variations bring life and individuality to the piece.
The edges of the pedestal are decorated with characteristic black beading, an ornamental detail frequently encountered in Amsterdam School furniture. Alternating rounded beads and elongated elements form a rhythmic border along the tapering legs and around the hexagonal top. The dark decoration provides contrast with the warm colour of the wood, emphasizing the geometry without overwhelming the design.
The top is finished in oak veneer, adding another subtle variation in grain and texture.
With its proportions and strong architectural character, this pedestal makes a particularly attractive accent piece. It works beautifully as a display stand for a sculpture, ceramic object or vase, and is equally suitable as a plant stand.
A charming example of the Amsterdam School's ability to turn an essentially functional piece of furniture into something considerably more interesting.
