Product Details

A stunning and very large Louis Bogtman Chandelier in stained wood (batik technique), ca. 1920s, Netherlands. A pendant/chandelier by Louis Bogtman is a very rare find. Louis Albertus Bogtman (1900-1969), nepfew of stained glass artist Willem Bogtman, was trained in this uncle's glass studio in Haarlem and later by his own father. In the 1920s, L. Bogtman started handcrafting all kinds of smaller and bigger objects using batik decoration technique on various materials. The family studio was best known for its stained wooden furniture and small utensils such as bookends, clocks and bowls. The designs were clearly orientally inspired and they are now considered to be part of Amsterdam School movement. The studio closed around 1935. Bogtman spent his last years in Copenhagen and died in 1969.

The lamp is in excellent condition, the wood has very little signs of age and wear. The ropes are in good condition and original. The fabric has probably been renewed around the 60s or 70s and is in fair condition. The wiring has also been renewed around that time. It works with one lightbulb (E27). The ceiling fixture has has pre-drilled holes along the edge to attach it to the ceiling.

Provenance: This lamp in the shape of a wheel was designed for one of the executive rooms of the famous Fongers Bicycles factory in Groningen (North of Netherlands).
