Amsterdam School Accent Table in Oak with Black Ball Accents, Netherlands, 1920s
A modestly sized yet highly decorative Dutch Amsterdam School occasional table, made in the 1920s in solid oak with black-stained wooden ball details.
The table has a wonderfully graphic silhouette: a round top, a strong cylindrical apron, broad sculptural legs and curved open supports that give the piece a lovely silhouette. The black ball feet and small bullet-like side accents are typical of Amsterdam School furniture, where even a modest object is allowed a touch of theatre.
It is a very well-made and sturdy little table, elegant in scale but full of character. The warm oak, rounded forms and dark accents make it especially suitable as an accent table, side table or lamp table in an interesting, eclectic interior.
The Amsterdam School was one of the most imaginative Dutch design movements of the early 20th century. Flourishing between roughly 1910 and 1940, it began in architecture but quickly influenced furniture, sculpture, metalwork and interior design. The style is known for its expressive forms, sculptural details, craftsmanship and sometimes wonderfully bizarre decorative language. It can feel modern and medieval at the same time, disciplined yet eccentric, which is exactly where its charm lies.
This table is a fine small example of that spirit: useful, compact, beautifully made and just strange enough to be memorable.
The table is in very good vintage condition with only minor wear consistent with age and use. The table is stable and presents beautifully.
