A striking modernist table lamp, most probably French and dating from the late 1940s or early 1950s. The design sits beautifully between Bauhaus and Art Deco design and early post-war modernism.
The lamp is built around a central chromed stem, surrounded by a ring of thick vertical glass rods. These rods catch, refract and multiply the light in a wonderful way, giving the lamp a lively architectural quality even when it is not switched on. When illuminated, the clear rods become almost column-like, creating a play of reflections between the chrome, glass and black lacquered base.
The shade is a particularly strong element: a smooth white opaline glass dome with a mushroom-like silhouette. It softens the light beautifully and gives the lamp its futuristic character. There is something wonderfully forward-looking about the design. The black circular base, chrome details, glass rods and opaline shade form a very pleasing composition,with a highly and atmospheric result.
The lamp is very heavy and well made, with a solid presence. It has two small bulbs inside, placed beneath the opaline shade. The construction is completely original, and the lamp remains in very good condition for its age.
Condition is good regarding age and use, including small dents and wear to the black lacquered base and some scratches to the glass rods. These are only visible on close inspection and do not disturb the overall appearance. The opaline shade is in excellent condition and comes off for changing lightbulbs.
A rare and highly decorative piece of modernist lighting, ideal on a sideboard, desk, console or as a striking accent in a curated interior.
